Religion in Public Life
Date: 4/22/2008
Rev. Dr. Welton Gaddy, president of the Interfaith Alliance, discusses the nature and importance of religious liberty in relation to democracy. Gaddy addresses the role of religion in the presidential campaign and reminds the audience that America is electing the “commander-in-chief” not the “pastor-in-chief.” He believes that religion is not a reason to vote or not vote for a candidate; however, he argues voters have the right to know how a candidate’s religion will impact their decision-making on issues. Gaddy also argues that there is a sound reason the founders did not want to entangle religious institutions with government institutions.
